I can't believe Keaton is 6 years old and has finished Kindergarten. It seems like just the other day we found out we were expecting. I remember the day in August 2002 when Mark had been mowing the yard. When he came inside he sat next to me on the bed and said, 'I think I'm ready to have a baby'. I had poked fun at him making sure he wasn't having a heat stroke or maybe he had hit his head. And on September 22, 2002 we found out we were expecting. His due date was June 2, 2003. Mark went to all of my doctor's appointments with me and I had a normal pregnancy up until December 24, 2002.

Of all days for your doctor's office to give you bad news...New Year's Eve. They called with the test results for Downs Syndrome and Trisomy 18. My doctor also test for Cystic Fibrosis which is the most common genetic disease among Caucasians. The test results came back positive for Cystic Fibrosis and all I heard was 'we found a mutation'. You can't say that to a pregnant woman. Anyway, Mark and I went to genetic counseling. We found out that I was a Cystic Fibrosis carrier and Mark would be tested. If he was a carrier also, each and every one of our children would have a 25% chance of having the disease. Luckily, Mark is not a carrier of the CF gene, but this process took a month. A month of worrying about our unborn child. From this we know that our children have a 50% chance of also being a carrier and will have this knowledge going into their parenthood years.

The rest of the pregnancy went great although I was told to expect a big baby. I just knew he would come early, but he made me wait. I was working at Enterprise Rent A Car and took a week of vacation right before his due date. That Wednesday night, Mark and I went to the hospital with contractions, but we were sent home. Friday we were told once again to go to the hospital. I wasn't having contractions so I really didn't want to go. There was some wetness, but did not feel my water had broken. We went, were tested and my water was leaking. They decided to induce, but there was no room at the inn. We transported to a different hospital and they started the induction at 5:30 pm. Keaton was born May 31, 2003 at 1:29 am. He weighed 9 lbs 7 oz.

Aunt Kerrie gave him his first bath and wrapped him in a warm towel.

Keaton-2 months old

He looks so big because he was. Remember he was almost a 10 pound baby. I was still figuring out how to go places with a baby. Getting him fed, changed and in the car seat without having to change him again. He had acid reflux. I nursed him for 4 months and then the pediatrician put him on a soy formula. This will make much more sense in a few more months.

At Keaton's 9 month well visit, the doctor discovered he had a heart murmur. We were sent to Texas Children's for an EKG and Echo. He was diagnosed with a VSD-Ventricle Septum Defect. At his most recent visit with the cardiologist, the VSD is still there, but causing no problems. It is supposed to grow closed on its own.

Also at 9 months, Keaton had an allergic reaction to cottage cheese. He took 1 bite and broke out in hives all over his face and neck. After seeing an allergist, we found out he was allergic to milk, egg, and peanuts. We still avoid these products today.

So if all of the news at 9 months was not enough, at 14 months old we found ourselves in the hospital having emergency surgery. Keaton became ill overnight crying in pain, and by 6:30 am he would not move, and continued to cry. Tests and X-rays were taken at the ER and the results of the blood test revealed a septic hip. We were transported to Texas Children's and the orthopedic doctor performed emergency surgery to flush the bacterial infection from his hip joint. He stayed in the hospital for a week and the hip drained. Once back home we had to continue IV antibiotics every 8 hours for 3 more weeks. Which means I had to wake him in the middle of the night. It took 30 minutes to administer each dose. Besides the surgery, he also had to have an MRI to make sure the infection did not get in his bones and a PIC line was implanted to administer the drugs and draw blood. This was a blessing after the number of times he was poked and poked.

What a trooper! This was actually his first juice box ever. I guess I thought he couldn't drink from a straw.

This was his PIC line. It was stitched into his arm. (He still has the little scars) It is a more permanent line that goes up his arm and over to his chest. You can put drugs in and draw blood out. One day it clogged though and we had to once again go to TCH to have them help us unclot the blood.

July 2005 Keaton decided his pool was not cool enough and climbed into the ice chest. We spent 4th of July 2005 at the creek, just as we did Keaton's 2nd bday although I didn't include a picture.

Just like at Easter, our street has a block party for Halloween. My sweet little clown. He didn't know what to think of the scary costumes. Look at Batman next to him. Thankfully he has since moved.

And then in August 2007 another week of bad luck. Keaton jumped in the swimming pool at swim lessons and hit his chin on the side of the pool requiring an ER trip. This was on Tuesday. I called Mark to come home from work to take him and they actually 'glued' his chin back together. Easier on him, but it didn't hold.

And then, Keaton fell off the foot board of our sleigh bed landing on his left shoulder. It broke his collarbone. This was Thursday. Again I called Mark home from work to take him back to the ER.....wondering if they would investigate us for child abuse. He had to wear the sling for 2 weeks and limit the use of his arm, but it healed quickly. His collarbone should straighten out as he continues to grow. It should be a straight line, but when broke looks more like a 'L'. OUCH! But on the second trip to the ER they also 're-glued' his chin.

Well, it comes in 3's right. We attended a birthday party on Saturday of the same week. Keaton was playing fetch with their dog who became a little aggressive and bit Keaton in the face. It left a couple marks on his cheek and under his eye and busted his lip. But he was overall okay.
